Rangers snapped up former Hibernian captain Ian Murray in the summer of 2005.

Murray, a versatile left-sided player who can operate in defence or midfield, spent six years at Easter Road - the last couple as skipper - and it was Alex McLeish who lured the Edinburgh-born player to Hibs back in 1999.

Six-footer Ian started his career at Dundee Utd but McLeish recognised his talent early on and enticed him to the capital where he flourished, after an initial loan spell with Alloa.

The 25-year-old performed superbly against Rangers down the years and even struck twice against Eck's Light Blues - he scored in a 3-2 League Cup defeat in October, 2002 then headed a consolation goal in a 5-2 defeat at Ibrox in August, 2004.

Murray, with over 160 competitive games under is belt, was first capped by former Scotland boss Berti Vogts in 2002 - a 3-1 win over Canada and remains a key player in Walter Smith's set-up. He was also one of four Rangers players that travelled to Japan in May to help the national team lift the Kirin Cup.

Ian has one Scottish Cup Final appearance to his name - the 2001 defeat by Celtic - but has joined Rangers to win trophies and will be a valuable member of the squad for years to come.
